Cricket community gets behind late Life Member’s charity walk

The St George District Cricket Club’s annual Warren Saunders OAM Tribute Charity Walk will take place this Saturday to recognise the enormous contribution Saunders made to the St George and cricket communities.

The St George Sutherland Medical Research Foundation (SSMRF) will again be the recipients of funds raised from the walk.

The charity walk is being held on the second anniversary of Saunders’ passing at the age of 88. Saunders was a member of St George DCC for 75 years, captained NSW as a player and was at various times a director of Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia.

In 1977 he was awarded life membership of Cricket NSW.

St George DCC president Kevin Greene will lead the walk, commencing at Hurstville Oval before following a roughly 20 km path to Sutherland Oval where St George and Sutherland will clash in first grade. Greene will be accompanied by John Saunders, his wife and children.

Over the last 11 years the annual St George DCC Charity Walk has raised over $200,000 for SSMRF and according to Greene is the club’s way of giving back to the community that has supported them for 115 years.

“It is fitting that the walk now honours one of our cub’s greatest on and off field members,” Greene said.

“The term ‘legend’ is overused, but in Warren’s case inadequate.”

Details on how to donate can be found on the SSMRF website.
