Women’s NSW Premier Cricket season set for fast start

The 2023-24 Women’s NSW Premier Cricket competition will get underway this weekend, with teams from across four grades – first, second, third and U18 Brewer Shield – preparing for a highly anticipated start to their cricketing summer.

Players selected in third-grade sides commence their season on Saturday October 7 with a 40-over-a-side fixture, whilst those in first and second grade, as well as the U18 Brewer Shield begin their premiership campaigns on Sunday October 8 in the fast-paced 20-over-a-side format.

Cricket NSW would like to acknowledge Kingsgrove Sports, who will sponsor the first-grade T20 tournament, offering prize money for the first time in the competition’s history.

In similar fashion to last season, the top four teams at the conclusion of the regular women’s first grade T20 rounds will meet at Cricket Central for a triple-header finals series, scheduled to take place in January 2024.

The women’s NSW premier cricket competition welcomes Sydney University Cricket Club to the 2023-24 draw. A merger between what was formerly known as Universities Women’s Cricket Club and Sydney University Cricket Club has given rise to the brand-new women’s cricket program. The club is headlined by Australian representative Phoebe Litchfield, with former superstar Alex Blackwell appointed as Head Coach of the women’s program.

Additionally, the Illawarra Brewers will now be known as the Southern Swans, and a Blacktown Mounties squad has been introduced to the Brewer Shield draw

Competitions Officer at Cricket NSW, Sean Mantle, is enthusiastically awaiting the start of the new season and is delighted to see the positive developments taking place in and around the women’s competition.

“We’re looking forward to getting underway,” Mantle said.

“It’s exciting to see the continued growth of the women’s game, highlighted by the introduction of a Blacktown side to the women’s Brewer Shield competition.

“We’d also like to thank Kingsgrove Sports for their involvement in the women’s T20 competition this season. They’ve always been a strong supporter of women’s premier cricket but the introduction of prize money towards the first-grade 20-over competition will hopefully only elevate this tournament further.

“As always, we wish all clubs, cricketers and volunteers the best for the season ahead.”
