Umpiring

Volunteering as an Umpire is a great way to participate and facilitate Junior Community Cricket matches. Umpiring provides you with a chance to not only contribute to the sport you love but also to challenge yourself and stay connected to the game.

Cricket NSW conducts several Community Officiating Courses for associations during the year providing the ideal foundation to assist volunteers to manage the flow of matches, interpret Laws and deliver signals to scorers.  Umpires are an integral part of the game, ensuring fairness, safety, and excitement for all involved. Umpiring cricket also helps to develop essential skills including leadership, sharp decision-making, effective communication, and adaptability.

There are several workshop options available to help you to officiate at the level you need:

CA Community Officiating – (Level 1 Accreditation)

Ideal for junior cricket competitions. Comprising of two parts; an online component and a face-to-face workshop which takes approximately three hours and can be facilitated as a morning, afternoon or evening session covering 19 key Laws of Cricket. The online component takes around an hour to complete and costs $40; but is free for female participants. *A Working With Children Check is not applicable to any parent acting as an Umpire in a match in which their child or children are participating.

Laws of Cricket Training Course – (Level 2 NSWCUSA Accreditation)

Taking place over a full day (9am – 5pm Saturday or Sunday – excluding an open book assessment), this course provides an introduction to the application of the laws of cricket. Whilst not as comprehensive as 2-Day course, this LITE offering will cover the requirements of the assessment (offered online at a later date). The cost for non-members is $40, but the course is free for NSWCUSA members and prospective female umpires. *A Working With Children Check is not applicable to any parent acting as an Umpire in a match in which their child or children are participating.

To obtain formal qualifications as an Umpire, the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association run numerous Umpiring Courses each season. Membership of the Association is available to those that sit and pass the entrance exam offered at the end of an eligible course.

NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (NSWCUSA) facilitates training courses on the Laws of Cricket for prospective umpires across NSW.

Umpiring is open to men and women of all ages and stages of life. Umpires range from young people wanting to be involved in cricket to retirees wanting to stay active and participate in a worthwhile community activity on a weekend. If you want to be an umpire, and make a contribution to cricket, there is a place for you umpiring Australia’s favourite sport in one of our many competitions in NSW.

The course is suited to prospective umpires, team captains and players, club officials, coaches and team managers.

There is an assessment task on the Laws of Cricket held at the conclusion of the course.

Completing this task to an acceptable standard enables the candidate to apply for membership of NSWCUSA.

NSWCUSA members officiate in the Sydney Cricket Association Grade and Shires competitions, and also in representative programs of the NSW Country Cricket Association.

We currently have member Rodney Tucker officiating in matches at international level as a member of the ICC Elite Umpire Panel, while NSWCUSA members Gerard Abood, Greg Davidson and Anthony Wilds receive appointments to umpire in Cricket Australia conducted competitions.
