Week 18 – ‘The Opening Spell’

Manly Warringah's Jordan Daly // Ian Bird

First ball – If at first you don’t succeed!

The old saying “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” was taken to the extreme on Saturday, when Jordan Daly made his first-grade debut for Manly-Warringah against Sydney University.

The 29-year-old had made his first appearance in NSW Premier Cricket in fifth-grade in January 2009, scoring 19 (not out) against Mosman. In the intervening 15 years, Jordan had played a further 179 games in all grades, mostly in second (69 games) and third grade (87 games).

He has scored six centuries, five in third-grade and one in second-grade. His highest score was the first of these, 150 (not out) in third-grade against UNSW in the opening round of 2012-13.

On Saturday, Jordan batted at number seven and at stumps was on 90 with Manly-Warringah, 6-307. Unfortunately, the fairy-tale ended there, as he fell to the third ball of the day on Sunday, still on 90, (from 179 balls). Nevertheless, the Waratahs wrapped up the win by 90 runs.

Second ball – That’s why they call it a bowling unit!

  • UTS North Sydney’s second-grade side produced a tremendous effort with the ball to claim victory over Sydney University at Marrickville Oval. Eva Jenns (2-1), Emily Aitken (2-1), Sophia Mavros (2-1), Lavena Rampal (2-5) and Georgia MacDonald (2-6) took two apiece in the Bears win.

  • Sydney’s third-grade bowling attack were simply unplayable against Sydney University at Campbell Park on Saturday. Carlene Colahan (4-2), Kylie Hocknell (3-6), Kellyn Coetzee (1-0), Kaisha Kapadia (1-1) and Deborah Smith (1-25) combined as the Tigers took the Students down by a margin of 68 runs.

  • St George-Sutherland won their third-grade match against Bankstown at Gannons Park by 82 runs, thanks to a special effort from their bowlers. Eliza Parslow (3-4), E'Ling Wong (2-0), Mikayla Kolbe (2-8), Phoebe Allen (1-7) and Stephanie Gillett (1-8) took wickets for the Slayers.

Third ball – The all-rounders double!

Eastern Suburbs first-grade captain, Marcus Atallah, completed the all-rounders double, a century plus five wickets in an innings, against Campbelltown Camden over the weekend.

Atallah claimed 5-124 before scoring 100 runs (from 135 balls), though his Dolphins would be dismissed 54 runs shy of the Ghosts total.

Fourth ball – Triple-figure triumphs!

There aren’t too many greater feelings in cricket, than notching a century and winning the match on runs.

  • Campbelltown Camden’s Claire Koski reached her ton (103 runs from 105 deliveries) in a 24-run first-grade victory over Northern District at Asquith Oval on Sunday.

  • Gordon’s first-grade captain, Kinjal Kumari (102 runs from 137 balls), passed the milestone to propel her side to 254 from 50 overs. The Stags would restrict their opposition, Sydney University to 10/226, winning by 28 runs.

Fifth ball – Two’s tons!

  • Cameron Kwok (Hawkesbury) | 123 (not out) from 163 balls
  • Jack Shelley (Gordon) | 110 from 118 balls
  • Blake Noorbergen (Parramatta) | 101* from 95 balls
  • Justin Felsch (Bankstown) | 101 from 94 balls

Sixth ball – Bawcombe brilliance in Brewers!

Parramatta have jumped into the top four on the Brewer Shield ladder after a vital win against Manly Warringah at Old Kings Oval on Sunday.

The hosts chased down the Waratah’s 80-run total after Sarah Bawcombe produced the spell of the competition, snaring 5-6 from 6.2 overs.

Bawcombe’s match winning spell comes at a crucial time with only two regular rounds of the U18 competition to go.

Second Over

First ball – Defeating the undefeated!

Bankstown’s Sam Cordingley snared 5-32 from 10 overs to help his Bulldogs take down a previously undefeated Parramatta fifth-grade side at Grahame Thomas Oval on Saturday.

The visitors were 12-0 leading into the limited-overs fixture, and with this win, the Bulldogs move within striking distance of the top 8.

Second ball – Six of the best!

Steven Milliken, from St George’s fourth-grade side, collected six wickets from his 10 over spell against Blacktown on Saturday.

Milliken was the only bowler to claim six wickets in an innings over the weekend! The Saints marched on to a 9-wicket win.

Third ball – First-grade centuries in Round 13, but they get progressively larger!

Marcus Atallah made 100 (135) for Eastern Suburbs whilst James Psarakis scored 109 (144) for Western Suburbs. Austin Waugh added 126 (195) for Sutherland as Nick Appleton tallied 144 (208) for Campbelltown Camden. Mitchell Crayn produced 149 (162) for Northern District and Brent Williams led the scoring for Penrith with a mammoth 173 (236)!

Fourth ball – Five-wicket hauls from Women’s Premier Cricket!

First-grade

  • Emma Hughes | 5-18 for Penrith against Sydney
  • Frankie Nicklin | 5-25 for Sydney University against Gordon

Second-grade

  • Erica Sharma | 5-11 for Manly Warringah against Sydney
  • Jessica Galeano | 5-28 for Northern District against St George-Sutherland

Third-grade

  • Shannon Heath | 5-12 for Gordon against Parramatta

Fifth ball – Fair play Fairfield!

Fairfield-Liverpool won the toss and opted the bat in their third-grade clash with Northern District.

They found themselves all out for 92. Despite the Rangers passing this target well within the allotted overs, the Lions let Northern District bat on.

As a result, Rangers opener, Nicolas Apps was able to raise the bat after reaching his century.

Sixth ball – Evenly matched!

Manly Warringah and Sydney University played out a tie in their fourth-grade meeting at Graham Reserve on Saturday.

Batting first, the Students managed 9/167 from their 50 overs.

Manly Warringah appeared to be on top at 4-126, but would lose five wickets for the addition of just 28 runs.

With the scores tied and the Waratahs needing one run for victory, University’s Orland Pender put one through the batsman and onto the stumps. Manly would finish on 167 all out with 5.2 overs remaining.
