First ball – Historic, memorable, remarkable!

UTS North Sydney took on Sydney University in the Brewer Shield at St Andrew’s Oval on Sunday.

Sharon Julien opened the batting for the Bears, and some 50 overs later, held two new club records.

  1. Julien became the first ever Bear to score a Brewer Shield century, adding 107 runs from 158 deliveries.
  2. She also now holds the highest ever score for the UTS North Sydney women’s program.

Just moments later, teammate Sameeksha Kuncham collected only the second hat-trick in the history of the Bears’ women’s program. Two bowled, one caught and bowled. Kuncham finished with figures of 3-13 and the Bears claimed a 153-run victory.

Second ball – The Students are learning!

Just three weeks after Ira Patel notched Sydney University’s first ever century in a second-grade clash against Northern District, Frankie Nicklin has raised the bat after striking the program’s maiden first-grade ton!

Nicklin amassed 104 runs from 137 deliveries away from home against a top-four ranked Campbelltown Camden side.

Sydney Uni would then defend their 234-run total as Vaishnavi Deobhankar ripped through the Ghosts line-up to finish with bowling figures of 5-21.

Third ball – Straight to the top!

Twenty-two-year-old William Fort could claim a century in an AW Green Shield match (146 in 2016/17) and one in a Poidevin-Gray fixture (112 in 2020-21) but none in other grades, with a high score of 81 (not out) in first-grade, in 2021/22.

On Saturday, he certainly corrected the record, more than doubling that score with 173 (not out) from 297 balls opening for Sydney against Sutherland and still being there at stumps, the score then being 4-324.

Fourth ball – Slip, slop, slapped!

Matt Sunshine, from Manly Warringah’s second-grade side, burst through Parramatta’s batting unit to secure the best bowling figures from any premier cricket fixture over the weekend.

Sunshine took 7-26 at Old Kings Oval to restrict the Two Blues to 111 all out.

Fifth ball – Spin to win!

  • Sydney’s Kira Churchland spun her side to success at Sutherland Oval on Sunday. The Tigers skipper claimed 5-25 against the top of the table Slayers.

  • Parramatta’s leg-spin sensation Jade Allen (5-28) proved unplayable at Merrylands Park, snaring five Northern District dismissals in a 56-run win.

Sixth ball – Come for the hat-trick, stay for the celebration!

Curtis Lucas claimed a superb hat-trick for Hawkesbury in their fourth-grade clash against Sydney University at St Paul’s Oval.

Second Over

First ball – Successive centuries!

Nick Appleton made it centuries in successive innings with his 130 runs (225 balls) for Campbelltown-Camden against an undefeated St George first-grade side.

Last week, Appleton tallied 144 runs against Eastern Suburbs. This was his third first-grade century.

Second ball – Robson Robbed!

Kayla Robson’s innings came to an abrupt end on 95 in her UTS side’s third-grade clash against St George-Sutherland. Not by dismissal, but by maximum team dismissals.

Robson was left stranded five runs shy of a terrific century after her team’s eighth, ninth and tenth batters unfortunately fell without scoring.

Third ball – Starting strong!

The following opening batters from the women’s second-grade competition got their team off to a flyer:

  • Northern District’s Emma-Jayne Howe (104) reached a century from 107 balls, while opening partner Sophie Clune remained unbeaten on 86* from 122 deliveries against Campbelltown Camden.
  • Manly Warringah’s Elizabeth Cambridge added 90 runs from 117 balls against Gordon.
  • Sydney duo Holly Toms (77) and Hayley Zauch (72) put on a 164-run opening stand against Parramatta.
  • Ira Patel made 81 at the top of the order for Sydney University against St George-Sutherland.
  • UTS’ opener Shiloh Julien (71) outscored everyone in her match against Penrith.
  • Caitlin Schofield’s 51 set the platform for a Slayers victory over Sydney University.

Fourth ball – First to forty!

Angus McTaggart took 6-31, his second five wicket performance of the season, and Randwick Petersham dismissed Blacktown for 196. It gave him 40 wickets for the season, the first to reach that mark.

Fifth ball – Outscored!

St George-Sutherland’s Lucia Martin tallied 117 runs against Penrith in their Brewer Shield encounter over the weekend.

Martin’s 117 made up over 50% of her side’s runs (219) and would outscore her opponents team total by 16 runs.

Sixth ball – Compare the pair!

Daniel Hughes opened the batting for Eastern Suburbs in their Limited-Overs Quarter Final clash against Western Suburbs at Waverley Oval on Sunday.

The talented left-hander notched a well-made century, 106 runs from 137 deliveries, to propel the Dolphins to 5/237 from 50 overs.

Josh Clarke opened the batting for Western Suburbs in their Limited-Overs Quarter Final clash against Western Suburbs at Waverley Oval on Sunday.

The talented left-hander notched a match-winning century, 129 (not out) from 133 deliveries to propel the Magpies to 6/238 from 44.1 overs.
