Prodigious allrounder Jack Edwards will become the 35th List-A captain of the NSW Men’s Cricket team, replacing Moises Henriques in season 2024/25.
Edwards will lead the Blues in this summer’s One-Day Cup competition, with Henriques continuing as Sheffield Shield captain.
The 24-year-old was one of the stars of the last domestic summer, named in the One-Day Cup Team of the Tournament by the Australian Cricketers’ Association and cricket.com.au, as well as taking home NSW’s top male honour, the Steve Waugh Medal, for the state’s Player of the Year.
After a stellar junior career, Edward’s debuted for NSW in red and white ball formats as a teenager in 2018 and will enter his seventh professional season this summer.
“It’s a tremendous honour to be given the captaincy of a team and a state that I love playing for,” Edwards said.
“I have been part of Cricket NSW Pathways and now the Blues for almost half my life and now I want to be able to lead the One-Day team into the future.
“We have a really exciting mix of young guys that I have come through with and also the older guys who have been there throughout my career. It’s an exciting time for this team.
“I’m really grateful that Greg Shipperd and Moises (Henriques) have put this trust in me and given me this opportunity.”
Henriques has put his support behind the move.
“I think this is a great opportunity for Jack to continue to develop his leadership and help NSW cricket into the next phase of our proud history,” Henriques said.
“I think it’s perfect timing as he can develop his leadership, whilst playing in the same team with some already experienced leaders such as Daniel Hughes, Jackson Bird and Nic Maddinson.
“Jack’s shown tremendous leadership already and has a good knowledge and understanding of the game and people, for a young player. I’m excited to have a front row seat as he takes the One-Day team forward.”
NSW will play a City vs Country match on September 6, before three 50-over matches against Victoria at Cricket Central on September 11, 13 and 15.
The Blues’ first match of the One-Day Cup regular season is also at Cricket Central, scheduled for September 22 against Western Australia in a rematch of last year’s final.
